Toyota recalls 40,000 Etios and Liva models for faulty hose pipe.

This year has been exceptionally difficult for the Japanese manufacturers. The earthquakes, the floods and the recalls have wrecked havoc on their cash registers since the start of 2011.
Well it seems that the recall ghost is back to haunt Toyota as the company has called back all Etios and Liva models manufactured before October 8, 2011 for replacement of faulty filler hose pipe.
The filler hose pipe is responsible for supplying fuel to the nozzle from the tank. Any cracks on the pipe leads to fuel leaks and erratic fuel supply.
The company will recall about 40,000 units of its Etios sedan and Liva hatchback cars for possible cracks in their hose pipe and fuel pipe. The recall represents more than half of 70,000 Etios cars on the road in India. This is a second recall from Toyota India as back in 2008, Toyota had announced a recall of around 20,000 units of Innova.
The recall is called “special service campaign” and Toyota dealers will get in touch with customers on the dates. The company says that the repairs will take no longer than 45 minutes and will be free of cost.

Five reasons why UbiSlate 7 should have been the original Aakash

The ultra low-cost Aakash tablet has seen a massive response from public ever since DataWindreleased the device online. The Aakash, also touted as the world's cheapest tablet, sold out in less than a week after its launch. DataWind had reportedly put up some 30,000 Aakash tablets online with a price tag of Rs. 2,500. Many will agree that apart from the ultra low-price, the Aakash tablet does not offer extraordinary features and lags on many fronts. The 7-inch tablet has been criticised for its slower processor and minimal features, especially when pitted against the better-specced Aakash 2.
The Aakash 2 a.k.a UbiSlate 7 is scheduled to launch in January at a price tag of Rs. 2,999. DataWind's next offering stands out as a better deal as compared to the original Aakash. It's notable that DataWind has not yet provided information about the availability of the original Aakash and appears to be focussing on the UbiSlate 7. The buyers may regret investing in the Aakash as an updated device is coming within few weeks with a marginal price hike. It would have been really great had DataWind launched the UbiSlate 7 as the original Aakash and won many more accolades.
Connectivity
On connectivity front, the original Aakash only supports Wi-Fi. It's notable that the several parts of India still do not have access to networking options such as Wi-Fi. One of the main ideas behind the Aakash was to bridge  the gap between the rural India and technology. The Aakash tablet with its limitation to the Wi-Fi networking options is unlikely to meet the purpose.
On the other hand, the UbiSlate 7 supports both GPRS and Wi-Fi. It also has support for optional 3G modems. Two full-sized USB ports are integrated into the unit allowing pen-drives, external keyboards, web-cams and dongles. The UbiSlate 7 is likely to see more usability in the rural India.
Battery life
Battery life is an important criteria for the mobile devices. The Aakash tablet comes with a 2,100 mAh battery, which is rated to deliver up to 3 hours of backup, depending upon usage. The UbiSlate 7 comes with a better 3,200 mAh battery.
Performance
The Aakash runs on Android 2.2 Froyo operating system and is powered by Arm11 – 366MHz processor. The tablet has a seven-inch resistive touch display with 800x480 pixels resolution. It has 256MB of RAM. The UbiSlate 7 runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and is powered by a better Cortex A8 – 700 MHz processor. The UbiSlate 7 is most likely to come with a capacitive touchscreen.

UbiSlate 7 is a phone
The UbiSlate 7 is not restricted to just browsing, as its SIM functionality also extends to voice calls. The SIM functionality is certainly going to appeal a lot of Aakash enthusiasts. The original Aakash has no such feature.
Android Market
The Aakash tablet does not support access to the Android Market, which means a lot of apps, ranging from educational and entertainment, will not be available on the device. The Aakash does support document formats: DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, XLS, XLSX, ODT, ODP, and can also run a PDF viewer and text editor. However, access to the apps could have been a major advantage. DataWind may address the limitation in their UbiSlate by providing access to the Android Market or pre-load some more apps in the device.

Nokia to train Indian students in mobile technology

Nokia has tied up with Bharath University, based out of Chennai, to offer students education in mobile technology. Still the largest manufacturer of mobiles in the world, Nokia has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the university, one that says it will share its expertise with students, in courses designed on current industry standards.
According to reports, meritorious students of the new courses at the university will be given industrial training. After successful completion of the course, students will receive certification from Nokia, becoming Nokia Developer Launchpad Members. The certification will give the students access to the latest technologies being used by the Finnish giant, and further access to global and regional training.
Speaking on the education partnership, Jasmeet Gandhi, head of services marketing at Nokia India, said:
"We envisage a huge requirement for qualified professionals in the field of mobile technology over the next 4-5 years. We are associating with various colleges to increase our talent pool. This knowledge sharing programme is a step towards achieving that goal"
The statement leads us to believe that other institutions will follow soon, also offering Nokia-helmed mobile technology courses.

New parts sharing strategy saves VW billions of dollars.

The German giant Volkswagen owns a lot of companies such as Audi, Skoda, Seat, Lamborghini, Porsche, Bentley and so on. Owning multiple brands means that your research cost on new products would be astronomically high. Thus, to keep cost low, multiple brands from the VW portfolio share platforms and components. But that’s not enough.
With the launch of the new Audi A3, the German czar will kick start the biggest tech overhaul in its history. The Audi A3 will be the first of 40 models that will kick off VW Group’s new strategy of using a standardized set of components, from steering columns to complete platforms, in cars manufactured by VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda.  The company hopes to lower cost by more than $6.5 billion a year.

VW Touareg dashboard

The idea will go a long was as VW plans to manufacturer as many as 3.5 million compact and mid-sized cars annually thus getting closer to its goal of becoming the world’s biggest and most profitable group by 2018.
And they are not alone. BMW said it lowered the cost of building the new 3-Series sedan by 7-9 % by using components from the 1 Series compact and midsize 5 Series.
Next year, all the German factories owned by the group namely Wolfsburg, Zwickau and Ingolstadt will start the process. Adjusting assembly lines may cost VW between 50 million and 500 million euros per factory.
Though the situation may seems shiny and bright, parts sharing comes at its own risk.  If there is an accidental supply of defective parts, the plague will run through all four brands of the group resulting in massive recalls.

Fuel cell technology Mercedes is heavily investing on, gets introduced to India through the Merc stall at Hall 15 of Pragati Maidan though there’s no market for it in the immediate future.

Telecom Sector Under Question Over Its Diesel Consumption

Earlier this year Greenpeace in its report “Dirty TalkingA case for telecom sector to shift from diesel to renewable”, highlighted the aggressive exploitation of diesel by the sector, as the second largest consumer, resulting in a loss of over Rs. 2600 crore to the state exchequer annually.
It’s been over 3 months since the Bharti Airtel led Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) failed to deliver on its commitment by coming up with a clear roadmap for the disclosure and progressive reduction of emissions by September 20114” said Mrinmoy Chattaraj, Climate and Energy Campaigner, Greenpeace India.
Concerned over the increasing exploitation of the diesel subsidy by the profit making telecom sector, representatives from across the political spectrum, have urged the government to take measures to accelerate a shift away from diesel and to renewable sources and technologies. These include members of parliament, cutting across party lines, including members of the standing committees for Energy, communication & Information Technology and Environment & Forest.
In their letters to the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the Communication &Information Technology Minister Mr. Kapil Sibal, and through parliamentary engagement, the politicians have specifically raised the need for substantially reducing the consumption of diesel by the telecom sector, especially in their network tower operations. They have further stressed on mandating the public disclosure of emissions and the establishment of the progressive emission reductions plans within the ambit of the newly proposed National Telecom Policy.

NISSAN PRODUCES 100,000th MICRA IN INDIA

Nissan India 100000 Micra
Nissan has rolled out the 100,000th Micra from the Renault Nissan Alliance plant in Oragadam near Chennai. The milestone has been reached in just over a year.
Nissan India exports Micra to European countries. Ultimately the Made In India Micra will be shipped to over 100 countries including Africa and Middle East. Nissan manufactures RHD and LHD variants in diesel, “Pure Drive” petrol and petrol avatars.
Nissan has not been able to match its contemporary Volkswagen but will hope things will fall in place with the introduction of the V-Platform sedan this year and the NV200 MPV in 2012. It has sold about 15k Micras in India.

Press Release

NISSAN PRODUCES 100,000th MICRA IN INDIA
- Manufacturing milestone reached in one year -
CHENNAI, 16 June 2011 – Employees at the Renault Nissan Alliance plant in Chennai, India are celebrating today after producing their 100,000th Micra in just over a year.
The first Micra compact hatchback rolled off the production line in May 2010. Since then the workforce has expanded to nearly 4,000 (from an original 1,500) to meet demand from within India and across the world.
The 45-billion Rupee (990 Mn USD) facility is the first dedicated Renault-Nissan Alliance vehicle manufacturing plant, and the 4th generation of the iconic Micra is the first model to be produced there.
It will be joined later this year by an all-new global sedan, and in 2012 a commercial vehicle will be added to the line-up as part of a joint venture with Ashok Leyland Ltd.
Since its launch in India last July the Nissan Micra has driven a sales boost within the market, with over 15,000 units sold to date. The innovative Micra is also produced at plants in Thailand, Mexico and China.
Chennai, which will have an overall plant capacity of 400,000 units at full ramp up, will ultimately supply Micra to over 100 countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. To date nearly 70,000 units have been shipped from the nearby Ennore deep water port.
Gilles Normand, Nissan Corporate Vice President for Africa, the Middle East and India, commented: “I would like to congratulate everyone associated with the Chennai plant on reaching what will be the first of many production milestones.
“The plant, which provides us with a skilled and localised production base, is a key part of our strategy for profitable and sustainable growth within India, and Micra’s success is only the first step in realising our potential within this market.
“Chennai is also crucial in terms of manufacturing high-volume, high-quality products for export to many world markets. With the continued strong support of the Tamil Nadu government, I hope that the facility will develop into one of Nissan’s most important production hubs.”
In addition to Micra, Nissan also sells the X-TRAIL lifestyle SUV, Teana sedan and 370Z sports car in India. By 2013, Nissan is aiming to have 85% coverage of the Indian market by expanding the number of dealers from 35 to over 100.
Managing Director and CEO of the Chennai Plant, Kou Kimura, added: “I am very proud of the effort that our Chennai staff, supported by our suppliers, have made to produce 100,000 Micras in such a short period of time.
“Today’s announcement not only reflects Micra’s popularity – both domestically and within export markets – but also Nissan’s long-term commitment to India.”

20,000th BMW rolls off the Chennai Plant

Mr.Juergen Eder Managing Director BMW Plant Chennai with the 20000th car rolling out from the assembly line at BMW Plant Chennai

As expected, BMW India has been on a roll when it comes to sales figures. The 20,000th BMW has finally rolled of the Chennai plant marking an epic milestone in the company’s India operations, the car being a silver X3 which was recently launched in India.
The production in the Chennai plant started way back in 2007 and currently assembles BMW 3- and 5-series saloons, the X1 and the X3 SUV. But we are pretty sure, that volumes were driven by the company’s entry level warrior – BMW X1.
The Bavarian giant has invested close to Rs 1.1 billion in the project with plans of increasing the investment to 1.8L billion by the end of 2012. Most operations in this plant are CKD and CBUs. The 2012 3 Series will also be assembled in the same plant in the near future. We definitely cannot wait for that!
The Chennai plant will also support the Mini brand in India. Although most Minis will come to India through CBU route initially, in the future, the company may plan CKD operations if the brand hits the sweet spot in India.
